Big Bird
2022
'Big Bird' is part of Sarah Tse's latest collection ‘Re-composing Identities’ that portray the inner and outer ideals of self with physical attributes. Piecing together magazine imageries with painted surfaces and found materials, Sarah’s spectacular and provocative mixed media collages explore the split nature of cultural identity, referencing consumerism, fashion and contemporary politics.
Using a variety of techniques from controlled spills to stencilling, photography, dragging paint and detailed brushwork, Sarah’s images exploit the physical qualities of her media to create a self-referential sensuality. Her collaged photographic elements merge seamlessly into the painterly aesthetic.
Repulsive and ludicrous, Sarah’s eerie portraitures are also simultaneously attractive and glamorous: Paradoxical faces consist of animal parts, individual human body, wild plants, modern architecture, old machine components. Sarah engages in her own form of story telling, her scarred figures struggle to voice their identity.
