The Cardboard Granny
(2020)
Painting
|
Watercolor | Limited Reprint
Museum Grade reprint on Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm mould-made paper. Limited reprint.
In a city marked by staggering wealth inequality and an aging population with limited means in getting by, this frail, elderly 'cardboard granny’ represents the thousands of others who tirelessly and silently rid our streets of waste cardboard, frequently seen wading strenuously through traffic and busy sidewalks behind heavily laden carts. Though a familiar sight, they are also painfully invisible in society.
Size:
40cm (W) x 30cm (H)
Provenance:
Alvin c.k. Lam
Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Alvin recalls picking up a paintbrush long before chopsticks. In 2020, while experimenting with watercolor urban sketching, Alvin inadvertently embarked on a journey of 'rediscovering' his hometown as he uncovers untold stories along the way —often in the most ordinary, familiar, yet most overlooked places. Each painting brings to life tales of (extra)ordinary people whose lifetime of devotion and resilience weave into the rise of Hong Kong and the rich cultural heritage that makes Hong Kong so uniquely Hong Kong.
