Following in her father's footsteps at age 13, Ho Sau-Mei began training in the art of carving mahjong tiles by hand. Now in her mid-60s, Ho carries on her family legacy in the same shop where she grew up, while most of the industry has turned to factory-made, mass-produced plastic tiles. With only a few mahjong shi-fus (masters) left in Hong Kong and no successors to the trade, mahjong carving may very well disappear with her generation.

Alvin C.K. Lam is a Hong Kong–based self-taught watercolor artist who recalls picking up a paintbrush long before chopsticks. His ongoing series, Unspoken Stories, Unsung Heroes, celebrates these ordinary figures—the quiet backbone of modern Hong Kong—reflecting the enduring Lion Rock Spirit while evoking nostalgia amid the tension between tradition and progress.
