Reprint of "The Coppersmiths" (Medium | 40 x 30 cm - 2/40)

2023
After primary school, the Luk brothers began apprenticing with their father who founded Bing Kee Copperware in the 1940s. Their skills were acquired not so much out of interest, but for survival. Now octogenarians, the brothers have handcrafted countless giant herbal tea urns, gongs, and various cookware in their lifetimes. The duo were once part of a thriving copperware industry that has dwindled with the arrival of stainless steel commodities. Together they carry on a legacy as the very last coppersmiths in Hong Kong. This painting is part of the ongoing series titled "Unspoken Stories, Unsung Heroes" - watercolor sketches paying tribute to the remarkable men and women who are keeping Hong Kong's fading traditional industries alive. With few or no successors left, most of these trades are believed to become history within this decade and disappear entirely with this generation of artisans and craftsmen.
