Champei
2018
91x61cms, Oil and acrylic on stretched canvas
A Cambodian girl gathering 'champei', fragrant frangipani flowers.
Set against a background of Khmer yant, sacred Buddhist geometry and symbols. The circular 'Yant Maha Mongkol', which are auspicious blessings. 'Unalome'- the twist and turns on the path to spiritual consciousness. And one of my favourite Buddha sayings-
'No one saves us but ourselves.
No one can and no one may.
We ourselves must walk the path.'
I started this painting after a visit to Siem Reap. Cambodia is a country still coming to terms with its war ravaged history and grappling with poverty. The strong Buddhist beliefs of its people play a large part in helping them to deal with their devastating past and present struggles.
