Wong’s Rice Shop

2022
Museum Grade reprint on Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm mould-made paper. Limited reprint. Before the age of supermarkets, family-run rice shops were once the only way to buy the staple grain in Hong Kong. Like his father before him, Wong Tak-Kam creates custom rice blends with various textures for his customers. At nearly 80, he continues to deliver orders in person by bicycle. Although the introduction of prepackaged rice and modern-day eating habits have all but decimated a once-thriving trade, the human touch of a traditional rice shop shall never be replaced. This painting is part of the ongoing series titled "Unspoken Stories, Unsung Heroes" - watercolor sketches paying tribute to the remarkable men and women who are keeping Hong Kong's fading traditional industries alive. With few or no successors left, most of these trades are believed to become history within this decade and disappear entirely with this generation of artisans and craftsmen.
