Happiness is the path

2022
The title of the painting is from the saying, 'There is no path to happiness, happiness is the path.' The three boys are getsuls, novice monks of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, practised in the Himalayan region. A Tibetan Buddhist who becomes a monk leaves home and takes vows to lead a life of contemplation, meditation, renunciation and simplicity. I chose to paint the monks laughing and seeming to have not a care in the world, in contrast to the solemnity of their vows and the ascetic life they lead.
